Extra Credit

1. Which assignment did you ENJOY working on the best? Why?
The last project was my favorite because we were able to choose our own themes.  The art gallery visits really helped me find inspiration.  I really liked my theme (light) which is hwy I felt like I liked it so much as a project.  It's easy to get into something and enjoy it when we pick what we want it to be about.    
2. Which assignment did you ENJOY working on the least? Why?
 
There wasn't one assignment that I didn't enjoy doing but video blogging sometimes was my least favorite part because of how long some of the videos were.  Watching hour long videos on topics that I'm not always interested in is hard for me.  It lost my interest after 30 minutes.  

3. How did you like using BLACKBOARD?

I loved it, very organized page which made everything easier to navigate through.  

4. What is your opinion of the Discussion Groups in this course?

I liked it and I liked having to interact with other peers.  It was interesting reading what other people found interesting and about their projects, etc,. 

5. Did you participate in any of the extra credit projects in previous modules? If so, what was your opinion of them? (mandala, elgin marbles, culture, art critics)

I did not so I can't answer this question but I do like this extra credit option!

What would you keep? Mask project, Project 4, gallery visits, quizzes

7. Would you recommend this course to your peers?
Yes, absolutely! One of my favorite online classes! 

Module 16

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
I expected to learn more about certain artists and learn about new styles/forms of art.  I learned numerous things from this course.  I learned more about artists, time periods of art, types of art, and methods used.  
2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting?
Art doesn't have one set definition.  Before I thought art was just a way of expressing yourself, which it is but there's a lot more to it.  It's about expressing one self in many different possible ways.  Art has changed over time so I believe as art evolves so does the definition.  
3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
 I liked Andy Warhol starting off, someone who I still do enjoy, but after project 4 my new favorite artist is Jin Siyon.  I love the art he makes out of light, I find it truly inspiring and unique.  
4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
I love online courses.  I find them very easy because I have taken them before and I'm used to them.  This course was very easy and I felt like it was also very laid back.

Project 4 Reflection Journal

At first looking at this project I was freaking out because it seemed like a lot of pressure and kinda difficult.  I choose pieces of art created out of light.  I got the inspiration to do so when I visited the Albright Knox Gallery the other week.  This project was hard because light doesn't always show forms, movement or other principles and elements but I wanted to go with it anyways.  Light is seen differently between every person which makes it so interesting.  Light is also how we see everything we do only a daily basis.  The pieces I picked don't show emotion in someone's face or a story by using different values; it shows emotions by the colors which varies between people as we learned earlier on in the semester.  I found one artist specifically that I really liked after this project, my project is done with mostly all of his work.  His name is Jin Siyon and works a lot with LED light and nature.  This project was definitely interesting and fun to complete.

This video has shown me how much work goes into creating an exhibit.  It's important to have a great location, inviting place that also has interesting works of art that bring people back.  Art work has a huge relation with people's feedback and it's important to have an amazing exhibit created to keep the interests of everyone.  You want the observers to have a personal experience.  
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project? 
I enjoyed these films because these films provided me with more information about being a curator. I learned more about what it takes and the importance of the job.  These films definitely helped give me more ideas for my theme for my exhibit.

I picked Andy Warhol; Images of an image, because I always was very interested in Andy Warhol which I expressed during the first week of this course.  I also learned about his work during middle/high school.  I also picked the video about abstract expressionism and pop art in the 50's &60's because when I visited the Albright Knox gallery I loved the abstract art they displayed and has been something I've always been interested in.

They provide more information about different concepts that we have read about and provide more information.

These videos help elaborate on information I already knew and provides me with more information.  Seeing more visuals helps me understand the concept's better.  The Warhol video I was very interested in because of the narrator's voice, but the second video was much harder because of the narrator.

Art Gallery Visit #2




Petah Coyne, Ms. Redstockings: Notes to Women Sculptors in One Hundred Years, 1998-2012, Silk flowers, specially formulated wax, candles, acrylic paint, white pigmentpearl-headed hat pins, cast-wax statuary figure, fabric, wire, rubber (add many more). There were so many different objects used for the media of this piece which shows the detail and complexity of it.  There is use of color, shape, balance, unity, texture shown by the different objects used and created, movement shown by the taller part of the piece in the center, shape, rhythm, and form.  This piece must have taken a lot of thought to create which explains why it took several years for it to be finished.  I believe the artist wanted to show gentleness in this piece, by using pastel colors and extreme detail.  It is quite amazing.  
 Janet Fish, After Leslie Left, 1983-84, Oil on canvas.  Shows great amount of color, different texture shown in each object, unity and balance throughout,also shape. There are objects on a table such as a vase, bananas, coffee, duster and magazines.  From looking at the title After Leslie Left, maybe this was after a break up or friend moved out, showing the mess of a house or maybe objects Leslie may have left.  
Fernand Leger, The Walking Flower,1951, Ceramic.  This piece shows color, shape, movement, rhythm, unity and balance, and texture. I don't know what this piece is about but it is very interesting because it reminds me of a walking flower and I can see the movement of the flower without it actually moving.  I wonder why the artist chose these colors and different shapes of the petals.  The bottom petals' form look very similar to legs.

  • Pot lighting, in the ceiling shinning down on each piece

  • White/off white

3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?
  • White/off white walls, brownish tiles, tall almost ceiling to floor windows in some areas

4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?

  • The viewer walked around the room and could also direct their attention to art placed in the center of the room.  

Step 3: The Artwork
Questions about the artwork:1. How are the artworks organized? 
  • Equally spaced on the walls, all around the room and art set up in the center of the room, sort of set up a pathway of viewing
2. How are the artworks similar?
  • They are all of still life, which is the theme of this exhibition 
3. How are the artworks different?
  • All the artwork had different objects being presented, also different media used, different material painted/drawn on, different frames
4. How are the artworks framed?
  • Some art like sculptures were not framed but put on a pedestal, others were in glass cases and some were framed but in unique frames from the other artworks
5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?
  • The artwork was identified and labeled by a plate on the wall with all the information either to the left or right of the art, if it was a sculpture it was located either on the wall across from the art or on the pedestal, said the title, name of artist, media, year, and a brief description of the piece
6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?
  • They were all evenly spaced and were not too close to each other, there was a good amount of space from each artwork on the wall and a good space from artwork in the center of the room in relation to art on the wall
What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?
  • It made me look at the gallery differently because before I never thought about how important the lighting was and how certain lighting affected the artwork.  I also never thought about how the interior material affected the exhibit and gave it a certain feeling, along with the color of the walls.  It was interesting realizing all the little things that effect the artwork and made me realize all the work that must go into setting up an exhibit.

Module 11

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I choose expressionism and cubism for my two videos to watch this week because I wanted to further my understanding of both.  Also, they seemed most interesting out of the selection.  
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Cubism:
  • abstract and end with real objects we can recognize 
  • early 20th-century
  • different shapes used
  • many different view points to this concept
  • non-classical way of expressing form 
Expressionism:
  • colors used to express emotion
  • contemporary neo-expressionism
  • problematic relationship between man and women
  • tells a story/shows emotion
  • helps if you know some history about the time period of the art

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
These add further understanding to what we read in the chapters and also add more information to the concepts learning.  
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts
Long videos like these are sometimes hard to pay attention to and sometimes the voices make it harder but otherwise these were interesting films.  They provided more information and different visuals for us to see. It interesting to watch the narrator talk about certain pieces and break down their meaning.

1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces?
I picked these pieces because I liked the up-close self portrait with the flowers so I decided to zoom in on mine.  I like the piece with thousands of self portraits combined together; I wish I knew how to do that with my piece but I decided to take the shape of a square for my portrait like that piece.  In the Obama piece, I like the colors and different shapes/visuals added to the portrait which is why I decided to do something similar with mine.
2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait?
I wanted to use the computer and explore more of what I can do on Photobucket so I decided to do so with this project.
3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them? 
I wanted to multiply my picture like my one inspiration photo but I could not find out how to do that.
4. How does this piece represent you?
It represents me because well it's me, and I also used colors that calm me down in my piece.  Also, it is fairly simply which I like.  
5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work?
I used color, shape, movement, and unity.
6. Did you enjoy working on this project?
I enjoyed being able to create this with the computer and being able to make something of my own.
7. What do you think of your final artwork?
I really like it, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be and something different.  I think it represents me and looks much different from my original.

 Black man sticking his tongue out: This mask has color shown, a smooth texture, line shown throughout the mask on the skin,  and shape shown in the eyes and teeth, the mask also looks like it is symmetrical which shows balance and unity.  I choose this piece because I liked the cut outs.  

China Supay half-mask from Bolivia:This mask show plenty of different colors, balance because the mask shows symmetry, pattern in the squiggly lines shown on the mask which also shows lines, shapes shown in the eyes, texture seems smooth and also fur around the eyes.  I choose this piece because I liked the 3-D effect of it and the colors used.  

Rich masquerade in the AndesThis mask shows color throughout as well as line throughout the whole piece, their is balance and unity in the piece, I can't see texture very well, there is also pattern and repetition which is shown in the bottom half of the piece, there is also many shapes shown in this piece which can be seen by the huge heart in the middle.  I choose this piece because of the use of colors and patterns throughout the piece; it is very interesting.  

  • I will use color throughout my mask, texture with glitter and gems and bow, shapes shown by the gems, line by the curve in the bottom of the mask and in the lightning bolt
  • I thought this was a very inspiring project and I liked how my piece turned out.  The main elements I wanted to show in my piece were color and texture which I think my piece expresses well.

Module 10

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose the two African videos because I looked at the project for this week first before completing this.  The masks that I viewed in order to inspired my art was very interesting so it made me want to learn more about African culture and art.

African Art: Legacy of Oppression
  • glorifies mothers and chiefs
  • art may seem abstract/non realistic but makes sense to those of the culture
  • masks are very detailed
  • creation for all masks have different meaning
  • 'magic' in each mask

African Art:
  • wood and straw
  • most pieces in museums are less than 200 years old

  • rock art usually represent animals

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
They relate to cultures discussed in the text, especially with masks and importance.  This video and the text both help give me a further understand for our project due.  This video helped me learn more about masks and their importance.  
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
Videos help me learn better because I'd rather hear information and visually see what is being discussed.  They also helped express what is important in African culture and the meanings behind some masks and why they were created int he first place.

Module Nine

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I picked both of these videos because they both seemed like interesting choices.  Also, I wanted to choose videos about artists who I have never heard of before.  "Image of a Master" also made me pick Albrecht Durer's video because it seemed like it would have interesting artwork which it did.

Velazquez:
  • very realistic paintings
  • real looking people in his drawings
  • contrast of colors
  • backgrounds of paintings weren't very detailed
  • painted for the King
  • paintings showed abstract
  • seen to be more of an idealists
Albrecht Durer:Image of a Master:
  • art showed his love/admiration for himself by drawing himself in his art work
  • would use 4-6 coats of paint to create the color he wanted
  • didn't really use color
  • famous painting: "Feast of the Rose Garlands"

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
These videos add more depth to the time periods we have read about in the text and add a visual for us learners to help use better understand the text.  
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
They add more depth to what we are learning about.  Looking at visuals and hearing someone else talk about he subject makes it easier for me to understand.  

Exploring Line


1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
I didn't mind using my hand as a subject matter; it was actually quite interesting noticing all the lines you have in your skin.  I think drawing body parts are extremely interesting and hard. 

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I chose a pencil because I am more familiar with this media so I felt more comfortable completing the task with it.  Also, I find it less messy.  

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
It was extremely hard and even kind of embarrassing trying to draw with my left hand.  I am no artist as shown by my dominant hand drawing but the left one is horrible.  It was hard for me to use the pencil and create things proportionately.  

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
I think for the most part my drawings came out decent and the study was successful.  My dominant hand drawing has more proportion to it and looks more like a lanky hand but a hand.  My non-dominant hand drawing is fatter and not as much proportionate.  It was an interesting exercise to do and I learned more from it than I thought I would.  

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
I think I would try using it more to make it stronger and possibly another option for me but I don't think I would use it for future artwork.

  • I like learning about early art and how we use past methods today.  We develop pieces by looking at past art and advancing.  Also like learning about Greek art/culture because they have Gods and Goddesses.

More Human Than Human:
  • Seagull study

  • Numerous works of 'Venus' around the world, all very much similar
  • Humans obsess over bodies but don't necessarily have realistic visions of it
  • Why do we create unrealistic but realistic things? (no arms, by other limbs)

These videos go over topics discussed in the text but just add further depth to them.  There are many different images provided to help give use a deeper connection about what is being talked about in some sections of the text.  The repetition of pictures in the text and also in the videos.  
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I enjoyed the films and I like being able to pick films that interest us.  Given this option I think it's easier to grab more from the film and easier to pay attention to the detail.  These films were very educational and helped elaborate on ideas discussed in the text in more detail while providing us with more information.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
In the text, we read about Frank Lloyd Wright and his trade mark 'prairie houses".  We learn about his way of doing things and are given some examples as to why so many critics believe that he is the greatest American architect of his time.  Also, in the text we learn about reinforced concrete which is mentioned in the second video I watched.  
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
I think the films add more depth to topics we have read in the text because sometimes having more of a visual is more useful when it comes to understanding.  I think watching the videos instead of just looking at the pictures and having someone else talk about it makes it easier to understand.  Being able to see examples of prairie houses in the film made me realize what exactly Frank Lloyd Wright did and how they turned out.  Also watching how the reinforced concrete worked in the film made me understand the concept better.  
4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
I decided to chose the Prairie style video because I like the architecture of it.  I like how nature was always incorporated with the house and was respected.  I also enjoy houses where he used windows to kinda break the barrier of inside outside.  Ceiling to floor windows are something i'd like to have in my house.  I decided to watch the second video because I was interested in learning more about how we build skyscrapers and other buildings.  I was also interested in learning about the sensors that people can have in their households.

First, I looked at http://blogbyart2016.blogspot.com/, I liked the pictures she chose to show her elements and principles.  With both blogs I looked at it was interesting to see that one or more element/principle could be found in an object/ work of art.  I also found this out while I was taking my pictures.  I also looked at http://funart2825.blogspot.com/, she also chose daily objects to use to show her elements/ principles.  I liked how both of these blogs chose different ways to show elements/ principles. 

In project #2 none od our images were the same which was awesome because I got to look at more art that I may have not noticed while at the gallery.  Looking at the pieces shown was interesting though because after reading their response to the art I could agree with their comments.  Both of their pieces showed a lot of mystery and made me question the reason behind them.  It's interesting looking at what someone else is interested in and their opinions towards it and seeing how I can relate. 
 There were two that I personally enjoyed a lot; Reckless and Marquette for loom and see.  Reckless was abstract and actually done of the floor which was very unique and something I have never seen before. Marquette for loom and see was a sculpture outside that was very interesting and made me wonder a lot.  I want to know the reasons for creating such unique piece and how the artists got their ideas to create such abstract pieces.  

I think it's valuable to see others opinions and interests. It makes us see things that we may have looked over or not thought of.  I think seeing peoples comments on my work and looking at others; they were very helpful.  Also it helps us see who we might share common interest with art wise.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The text talked about blowing glass and the video showed us someone actually in the creative process of doing so.  Also we learn more about casting in the video as mentioned in the text.  The videos helped connect the processes talked about in the text by showing us how exactly they are done.  
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
I really like the glass and ceramics video mostly because I visited the Corning Glass Museum before and watched artists create glass.  It was cool seeing someone create glass in a furnace and blowing into the glass to help create it's shape at the museum.  It's more interesting now that I have a fuller understand of how exactly the process works and more about the chemical process of it all.  Also I enjoyed the sculptor video because it's crazy how huge some of these sculptors are and how they can start from huge chunks of material into beautiful things.  Being able to actually see both processes in video helps me further understand.
